This event begins on Nov 15, 2019 and ends on Dec 20, 2019
Barbara Houston’s new flock of kelp sheep are travelling to Quidi Vidi Village Plantation in St. John’s for an exhibit from November 15th – December 20th, 2019. Join us at the show opening on Friday, November 15th from 4-8 pm with artist talk at 5 pm. Mob of kelp sheep in attendance, all welcome, always.
Houston’s award winning sheep are made from kelp, wrack + eel grass collected from the shores along the coast of Newfoundland. Inspired by outport communities that have kept sheep for hundreds of years, wintering inland, summers on nearby islands, these kelp sheep are a testament to the resilience + resourcefulness of folks + their flocks.
Houston’s place based conceptual work is grounded in materials + meaning, observation + research, belonging + place. Whether two dimensional or three dimension work, large linen canvases or sculpting kelp sheep, Houston seeks to showcase the importance of place through her art, craft + design. Her full time practice BarbaraHouston ArtStudio + Gallery + SHEEP SHoP are in Bonavista, NL.
Exhibit supported by an ArtsNL Professional Project Grant
