In consignment shops, it is usually understood that the consignee (the seller) pays the consignor (the person who owns the item) a portion of the proceeds from the sale. Payment is not made until and unless the item sells.
Depending on the shop you work with the percentage split will vary. Consignor could get anywhere from 60-80%. Consignee could get anywhere from 20-40%
A contract is always a good idea. Consider things like: Who pays for theft, damage and shop wear? Does the consignee have any recourse if they want to remove their item from the shop?
